Gaming keyboard buying guide
Layout, switch feel, construction, connection, keycaps and serviceability determine how a keyboard works at the desk.
A full-size board keeps a number pad and dedicated navigation keys. Tenkeyless removes the number pad and creates more mouse space. Smaller layouts save additional room but place more functions behind layers. Choose the smallest layout that still supports regular gaming and non-gaming work.
Linear switches move without a tactile bump, tactile switches add a feedback point and clicky switches add both tactile and audible feedback. Spring force, travel, lubrication, housing and mounting also change the feel. Try several switches if possible rather than buying by color name alone.
Hot-swappable sockets allow compatible switches to be replaced without soldering. This can make repair and experimentation easier, but socket compatibility and switch orientation still need to be checked. A soldered board can be perfectly reliable when the selected switch is already known.
A wired keyboard is simple and does not require charging. Receiver-based wireless can serve gaming while Bluetooth can support multiple devices, but not every board offers the same features on every connection. Check whether remaps and macros are stored onboard.
Keycap material, profile and legend method affect feel and durability. Large keys depend on stabilizers, which can rattle or bind even when the switches are good. Standard key sizes make replacement sets easier to find.
Case material, plate, foam, switch, keycap and desk surface all change the sound. A pleasant sound can make the keyboard enjoyable, but it does not replace a suitable layout, reliable input or comfortable switch weight.
