Gaming
A gaming monitor should match the performance your system can sustain and the type of games you play. Refresh rate is important, but it does not replace motion clarity, variable-refresh behavior, useful HDR performance or a connection that can carry the chosen mode.
Decide before buying
Start with the games, platform, room and connection path. Product specifications become more useful after the setup is defined.
Choose a refresh rate your PC or console can use regularly rather than chasing the highest number on the box.
Screen size and resolution should make sense at the actual viewing distance and desk depth.
HDR support on a specification sheet is not the same as meaningful brightness, contrast and color performance.
Confirm resolution, refresh rate, bit depth, chroma and variable-refresh support for the exact DisplayPort or HDMI path.
A higher refresh rate can reduce the time between display updates and make motion look smoother when the system supplies enough frames. Windows exposes the selected refresh rate in display settings, so verify that the operating system is actually using the intended mode after installation.
Variable-refresh technology allows a compatible display to adjust its refresh timing to the GPU output. VESA's Adaptive-Sync Display certification uses published tests for variable-refresh performance; a logo can provide more useful evidence than a generic claim that a monitor supports adaptive sync.
Pixel transitions, overshoot, refresh rate and blur-reduction behavior all affect moving images. Compare measured performance across several refresh rates when possible. A single minimum response-time claim does not describe the full operating range.
VESA DisplayHDR is a certification program with defined tiers and tests. Certification does not make every certified display identical, but it is more informative than an unqualified HDR-compatible label. Contrast behavior, peak brightness, black level, local dimming and color volume still matter.
Windows 11 provides an HDR Calibration app for compatible HDR displays. Set the monitor mode, refresh rate and HDR state first, then calibrate and evaluate the image in the lighting conditions where you normally play.
