A controller or handheld should be evaluated as part of a platform: games, operating system, connection, display, battery, storage, accessories and the places where it will be used.
Decide before buying
Start with the games, platform, room and connection path. Product specifications become more useful after the setup is defined.
PC, console, phone, tablet, television and cloud-gaming support are not interchangeable.
USB, Bluetooth and proprietary wireless links can differ in features, headset support and pairing behavior.
Stick placement, rear buttons, gyro, touch surfaces and analog triggers matter differently by genre.
Battery type, charging, replaceable parts and stick or button service can determine long-term value.
Microsoft supports connecting current Xbox Wireless Controllers to Windows by USB, Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless. The available functions can differ by connection; for example, Microsoft's support material notes that some headset behavior requires USB or the Xbox Wireless Adapter rather than Bluetooth.
Update controller firmware before diagnosing intermittent behavior, mapping issues or accessory compatibility. Microsoft provides controller updates through console, USB or the Xbox Accessories app on PC, with limits on what can be updated over Bluetooth.
A portable system balances processor power, screen brightness, frame-rate limits, cooling and battery life. Lowering resolution, refresh rate or power limits can extend runtime, but the useful trade depends on the game and the display.
Check internal storage, removable storage support, download size and how reliably the platform suspends and resumes the games you play. A portable library is only convenient when the games fit and resume without a lengthy setup.
Consider replaceable sticks, button modules, battery access and manufacturer repair support. A premium controller with proprietary parts can be less practical than a simpler device that is easy to service.
